Hallow’s Eve Zine

Women know horror.

Who We Are:

An homage to the original 1986 Japanese magazine Halloween, we are a biannual femme created arts publication showcasing real life horror and the macabre through the lens of the dark feminine. Long left out of mainstream horror representation, women know horror. Hallow’s Eve delves deep into the haunting complexity of the female experience.

Issue 0, Full-spectrum Despair: Sunlit Horror in Vibrant Color. Midsommar. Seeking short stories, poetry, creative non-fiction, interviews, reviews, opinion pieces, photography, illustration, comics and other fine art.

The Story.

Years ago, I volunteered with a Seattle based group called Vaginomicon—a genius collective of women and femmes who gathered once a year to read horror short stories and raise money for Planned Parenthood. As someone who doesn’t consider myself a strong writer (I’m just an ideas girly), I was in awe of the talent around me. Year after year, the stories created were utterly fresh, new, and horrifying.

Then, the pandemic hit. I organized one last Vaginomicon online as a livestream, but in the haze of stay-at-home orders, BLM protests, and layoffs, the group faded away. I remained deeply struck. I lay awake at night thinking about the work, the ideas floating out there, unhoused and unseen. I had to do something.

I told the person I bring all my harebrained ideas to, my friend Lisa, and proposed an anthology of collected works. She loved it. Year after year, when I gave her excuse after excuse about why it wasn’t the right time, she kept bringing it up. She never let me forget that the idea was worth keeping.

I met Maggie at a screening of Sinners where I was a panelist. We talked, and I told them about the idea I’d been holding onto. Could they help? Maggie said they would do more than that.

So, here we are, during another time of great societal and political upheaval (crazy how this keeps happening). I’ve lost my dream job, and the job market is kicking my ass. And now, what was once a dream is now manifesting. I couldn’t have done it alone.

The Project

Hallow's Eve is an anthology zine that brings together the voices of women, femmes, and non-binary creators to print works of art, short stories, photography, interviews, poetry, and editorials around the topic of real-life horror. Each issue has a different theme and features a cover model "Eve".

Hallow's Eve is based off of a now defunct Japanese magazine for girls called Halloween monthly that featured comics, movie editorials, and stories of the supernatural. It is also inspired by EC horror comics like Creepy, Tales from the Crypt, and Vault of Horror.

Why we need your help…

We still need to raise about $2000 for the printing costs— the immediate printing of 200 copies of Hallow's Eve to be sent out to all who purchased a pre-order, copies to prospective retailers, and all of our contributors. The money also goes towards compensating the the contributors and staff. If we have any money left (fingers crossed) that money will go towards the next Halloween issue..

Reward Tiers

Besides the privilege and honor of being early to what is going to be remembered as the greatest collection of artistic minds in the horror space in decades—we also have some little treats:

  • If we raise $2100 - everyone who buys the physical book also gets the digital copy.

  • If we raise $ 2200 every order gets an iphone wallpaper of the cover, and digital copy.

  • If we raise $2500 every order comes with a sticker and a bookmark, iphone wallpaper and digital copy.

  • If we raise $3000 we can print 300 copies!

Stay tuned for in-person events like film screenings, workshops, panels, and parties to strengthen our communities. This is the beginning of a beautiful coven of creatives that I sincerely hope you'll join.
